The Lopes will play Denver on Friday, Nov. 25 at noon. GCU will conclude its homestand on Saturday Nov. 26 against Idaho. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. MST.Â
Â
The Lopes look to bounce back from a tough loss at Rice and pick up their second victory of the young season and remain perfect in GCU Arena.Â
Last Time OutÂ
GCU fell to Rice 64-50 in a physical contest Tuesday night. While the Lopes claimed 21 rebounds in the first quarter, with 10 offensive boards, they weren't able to convert the opportunities into points and struggled to get in a rhythm throughout the course of the contest. The Lopes had their best showing of the night in the second quarter as they shot 46.2 percent from the field and were able to cut the Owls lead to six with a 26-6 finish to end the first half.
Â
In the second half, the Lopes came out aggressive as
Jessica Gajewski nailed a 3-pointer to get GCU within three. The Owls quickly answered, rattling off six points from three consecutive layups to extend their lead back to 11. The Lopes couldn't mount a rally in the final quarter. GCU continued to try and get their offense in a rhythm, but were thwarted by an aggressive Rice defense that grabbed eight defensive rebounds for a total of 10 in the fourth. The Lopes remained steadfast, but the Owls continued to collect points off GCU turnovers which led to the final outcome of 64-50.Â
Â
- Marina Laramie led the Lopes in scoring for the second consecutive game after netting 15 at Rice.
- Laramie, Laura Marcos-Canedo, Jessica Gajewski and Zelor Massaquoi are the Lopes that sit atop the leader boards on the squad. Laramie leads the team with15.7 points per game. Marcos-Canedo leads with 5.0 assists per game, while Gajewski leads the squad with 31.3 minutes per game. Massaquoi now leads the team with an average of 8.0 rebounds per contest.
- The Lopes will host the GCU Thanksgiving Classic for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
- GCU is matching its opponents in turnovers per game with 6.7. The Lopes currently have 49 points off turnovers this season. GCUÂ produced more points off turnovers in its contests against Alcorn State (28) and Rice (12) this year.
- The Lopes recorded a team-high 21 rebounds in the first half, which included seven offensive boards in the first quarter against Rice.Â
