Fucile leads GCU at the Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO – The GCU men's tennis team finished play in the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State on Sunday. Freshman Lorenzo Fucile won the top flight singles title after winning five straight matches over the weekend. Fucile was crowned champion after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nico Borter.

The Lopes had much success in both singles and doubles play at the invite. In addition to Fucile's wins, fellow Lopes Mathieu Rajaonah and Philip Kuehnen picked up victories in the #1 singles flight. Rajaonah defeated Vatsal Bajpai of Concordia Irvine and Kuehnen topped David Hough of San Diego State in the first round.

Freshman Valentin Lang advanced in the second singles flight consolation bracket and ended up winning the final 6-2, 6-4 over Edvin Larsson of UCSD. Lang also partnered with teammate Justin Cvitanovic to advance to the consolation bracket finals of the first doubles flight. The duo was defeated by the team of Lopez and Marquand of Concordia Irvine.

Next up, GCU will rest for a week before traveling to Malibu, Calif. for the ITA Southwest Regional. The tournament will begin on Thursday, Oct. 20 and conclude on Monday, Oct. 24.
