PHOENIX – Western Athletic Conference play continues for the Grand Canyon men's soccer team as they face Houston Baptist and Air Force this weekend. To start out the week, the Lopes will face HBU on the road before heading home on Saturday, Oct. 9, to host Air Force.
After remaining unbeaten after the first weekend of WAC play, GCU sits in sixth place in conference and is one of four teams without a loss. It will be a challenging weekend for GCU as Houston Baptist and Air Force have a combined record of 3-1 with the AFA tied for first place in the WAC. Putting up shots has not been an issue for the Lopes, attempting the second most shots in conference this year with 141 shots, but scoring has been the problem. Despite attempting the second most shots in conference, the Lopes rank fifth in goals scored this season, recording 11 goals this year.
Houston Baptist is coming off a win against WAC opponent, UMKC, while Air Force is coming off a perfect 2-0 weekend including a win over HBU. Saturday's match against Air Force will be televised on the CW6 and will also be streamed on
GCU.TV.
Scouting Houston Baptist
In nine matches this year, the Huskies have scored eight goals, led by Malik Key with two goals. Despite struggling to score goals, Houston Baptist's defense has remained steady allowing just 1.62 goals a match, which is the sixth fewest throughout the WAC. This year Marc Anthone has been a constant threat this year with the ball as he is second in the WAC in assists with four this season.
Scouting Air Force
The Falcons are on a hot streak, riding a three-match winning streak and has also won seven of its last eight matches. Air Force's offense was firing on all cylinders in the first weekend of WAC play, scoring six goals against Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word. A key impact player for Air Force this season has been Austin Dewing as he currently leads the WAC in assists with five and is tied for the most game-winning goals in conference with three game-winners.
