With just three weeks left of the season, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team will partake in its final two-match weekend at home as they host Missouri-Kansas City and Incarnate Word. The Lopes head into the weekend sitting in sixth place and have the opportunity to move up the standings as UIW sits in fourth place and the Roos are in ninth place.
Â
GCU has only three matches left at home this season and play in front of a fan base that has come out and supported them in its first year at GCU Stadium. The Lopes have the third highest average attendance in the country, averaging 3,206 fans per contest. Head coach
Schellas Hyndman and his squad will look to get back to their winning ways, having not won a match at home since Sept. 15 against IUPUI. Â GCU continues to put up shots at a high rate, averaging 14.29 shots per contest, ranking second-best in the WAC.
Â
The defense has remained sharp throughout the season, allowing 18 goals, which is fifth best in the WAC and goalkeeper
Kendyl Day has posted the fourth lowest goals against average in the WAC, allowing 1.22 goals per match. Â The scouting report shows that there will be a lot of shot attempts between three players in the WAC as
Niki Jackson (GCU), Ben Conway (UIW) and Eric McWoods (UMKC) all rank in the top-six in shot attempts with Jackson being first with 53.
Â
Scouting UMKC
The Roos have not a match in their last four contests, with their last win coming on Sept. 30 against UT Rio Grande Valley. Missouri-Kansas City has struggled on offense this season, scoring eight goals in 11 matches, the fewest in the WAC this year. Eric McWoods leads UMKC with three goals this season and ranks sixth in the conference with 28 shots throughout the year. Last year, the Lopes topped the Roos in Kansas City, Mo. 3-2. In the match, GCU's
Niki Jackson scored two of the three goals to help give GCU the win.
Â
Scouting UIW
The Cardinals have found their groove late in the season winning two of its last three and are coming off a dominating 4-1 win over San Jose State. Four players have scored multiple goals this season for Incarnate Word and leading the team in points is Ben Conway with two goals and three assists for seven points. Conway ranks third in the WAC with 42 shots this season, averaging 3.82 attempts per game. Currently, the Cardinals sit in a tie for fourth place with UNLV at seven points.
