SEATTLE – Under rainy conditions, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team found themselves in a battle with the Western Athletic Conference's league-leading team, Seattle U. The Lopes gave the Redhawks everything they could handle and after mounting a late comeback, the Lopes fell short to Seattle U 2-1. GCU is now 4-7-3 this season.
The Lopes' offense was able to find multiple ways to attack Seattle U's defense as they attempted 14 shots with half of the attempts on goal. Five GCU players had multiple shot attempts, led by
Khadim Seye with three shots.
Seattle U did its damage in the first half, scoring in the 15th and 39th minute to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Despite being down two goals, the Lopes continued to push the attack offensively. In the middle of the second half, GCU created quality scoring opportunities off corner kicks as
Hector Montalvo came close to scoring twice in the 66th minute. Off an
Alexandros Halis corner kick, Montalvo placed a header on goal but Seattle U's goalkeeper came up with a deflection and Montalvo responded with a volley off the rebound and yet another save was made.
In the 78th minute, GCU was able to crack Seattle U's back-line and score to cut the Redhawks' lead to 2-1. After
Damian German was able to dribble the ball into the box,
Charles Keating came the side of the flank and fire off a shot to score his first career goal at GCU.
After Keating's goal, the Lopes were unable to get another shot attempt as Seattle U remained unbeaten in WAC play. The Lopes will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 21, against UMKC at GCU Stadium.
