ROMEOVILLE, IL – GCU men's volleyball defeated the No. 13 Lewis University Flyers for the first time in team history on Saturday, Jan. 30. The Lopes swept all three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21. Grand Canyon is now 6-3 for the season and 1-1 in the MIVA.
After a difficult match on Friday night, the Lopes responded in the best possible way to earn a marquee win for the program.
"We had a very different mentality going into tonight than we did last night," head coach Matt Werle explained. "We showed up a little earlier, played loose, and didn't back down. We bounced back quickly from errors and kept a constant pressure on. It was a great night for our team."
The Lopes compiled an outstanding attack percentage of 73% for the match. GCU knocked down 49 kills with only 8 attacking errors and were led by setter Michael Milstein. Werle noted that the junior ran a very well thought out offense throughout the whole night.
"This was the best our offense has looked all season," Werle added. "All three pin attackers did really good things for us. We were not as good as I would have liked blocking and defensively but luckily our offense was on point and couldn't be stopped."
Gerrard Lipscombe and Shalev Saada dominated from their outside hitting positions. Lipscombe led GCU with 17 kills and Saada added 13 of his own. Freshman Will Schwob stepped up and turned in his best performance of the season, contributing 8 kills and 6 digs.
GCU returns to Antelope Gymnasium for two home games against the New Jersey Institute of Technology next weekend. The first match will be played on Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. and the second will be on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.
