PORTLAND, Oreg – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball (0-4) team struggled against UC Riverside tonight, falling 3-0.
The Lopes were defeated 25-18 in the opening set, staying neck-and-neck with the Highlanders until they made a 6-0 run that pushed the score to 17-12. GCU wasn't able to make the comeback and came up short in the following sets 25-17 and 25-12.
Redshirt-sophomore
Jordyn Sanchez led the team with nine kills and earned five blocks. Sophomore
Natalie Tardy picked up seven kills and junior
Michelle Steagall tallied 21 assists.
GCU earned eight blocks during the match with Steagall, sophomore
Hannah Hicks, freshman
Katrice Pond, and redshirt-sophomore
Emily Christensen each earning two apiece.
"Tonight was disappointing and not what we had expected opening up this weekend," said head coach Kris Naber. "We've got a solid group of girls and will get back on track tomorrow. Remembering the big picture and trusting the process heading into our morning match."
The competition will continue tomorrow with a pair of matches in Portland, Ore. The Lopes will open the day against Portland at 11 a.m., before taking on Portland State at 7 p.m. A full recap and live links will be available at
