PORTLAND, Ore. – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (0-6) fell in two consecutive matches Saturday. They opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Portland (4-1) before falling 3-0 to Portland State (2-4).
Against Portland, the Lopes were defeated 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20.
Leading GCU in kills for the second straight game, redshirt-sophomore
Jordyn Sanchez earned a .312 hitting percentage off of 12 kills. Freshman
Melody Horton earned nine kills, while redshirt-sophomore
Emily Christensen led the squad in blocks with five of their 16.
Grand Canyon struggled in their match against Portland State, being defeated 25-18, 25-14, and 25-16.
Sanchez picked up another nine kills to take her season total to 44, while sophomore
Hannah Hicks earned eight during the match. Junior
Michelle Steagall tallied another 18 assists, after earning 20 during the morning match. She leads the Lopes in assists, totaling 135 with a 7.11 per game average.
GCU will host their first tournament of the season next weekend, Sept. 11-12, in Antelope Gymnasium. They will open the invitational against Gonzaga at 10 a.m. on the 11
th. That evening, they will face Charleston Southern at 4 p.m., before closing out the tournament against Niagara at 4 p.m. on the 12
