PHOENIX – In their first conference match of the season, the Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (2-11, 0-1) fell to Bakersfield (3-10, 1-0) today in GCU Arena for their second five-set match of the season.
The teams traded off in set wins with the Roadrunners winning the first 25-19, before the Lopes made the 25-23 comeback in the second. Bakersfield answered 25-19 in the third, but GCU won the spirited fourth set 26-14. In the end, Bakersfield earned the 15-11 victory to close out the match.
As a team, the Lopes were strongest in the fourth set where they earned a .333 hitting percentage off of 15 kills and 36 attempts with three errors.
Megan Byrnes had her strongest match so far this season, recording 18 kills (.378) and contributing 19.5 points.
Jordyn Sanchez earned 15 kills and 14 digs during the match.
Gracie Dimond earned a total of six blocks—three of which were solo—while also earning eight kills off of 20 attempts. Libero
Haley Glass picked up 19 digs, followed closely by
Emily Vitel (18) and
Michelle Steagall (17).
