STOCKTON – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team continued its three-match road trip with a trip to California to face Pacific. The Antelopes had to come from behind in order to pull out the win but with two second half goals, the Lopes got back to their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. GCU is now 4-2 this season.
It was a slow first half with 10 combined shots, six by GCU as both teams looked to get a feel for the game and control the pace of play. Once the second half kicked in, both teams picked up the play offensively and started to take more chances going towards goal. Nine minutes into the second half Pacific would strike first with a goal from Tristan Blackmon.
Instead of putting their heads down after giving up a goal, GCU responded with an attack of their own opening the game up offensively, creating more opportunities on the offensive end and the Lopes would capitalize. In the 56th minute, three minutes after Pacific's goal, GCU responded with a goal of its own from Andy Alanis for his first career goal at Grand Canyon. Alanis received a low cross from Alberto Sanchez Garcia in the box where Alanis was able to put it in the back of the net to tie the match.
Grand Canyon didn't stop there as they continued to pressure Pacific's backline and in the 65th minute, the senior Garcia would step up yet again for his fourth goal of the season. With Jose Rodriguez Nieblas controlling possession at midfield, Garcia was able to make a run, sliding behind Pacific's backline and Nieblas led Garcia into the box. Garcia would capitalize on his one-on-one opportunity giving the Lopes the 2-1 lead.
GCU's defense stood tall after giving up a goal in the 54th minute allowing just four shots in the second half. Goalkeeper Kendyl Day picks up his third win of the season and Grand Canyon remains undefeated (3-0-0) all-time against the Tigers. Garcia's goal was his first game-winner this season. The victory was GCU's second come from behind win this season.
Grand Canyon will close out its road trip this Sunday, Sept. 27, against Cal State Fullerton. Kick off against the Titans is at 1 p.m.
