FULLERTON – To wrap up its non-conference schedule, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team faced Cal State Fullerton. The Antelopes gave up two goals in the second half and dropped a 2-0 match to the Titans.
"I thought we played very well for about 60 minutes of the game until we got fatigued," head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "We had a tough trip where we faced the University of Pacific, then bused to get a flight to Fullerton the next morning so it makes it tough for the guys to play after a six hour trip. We gave everything we had and I was proud of the way our guys competed."
The Lopes were able to stay intact defensively in the first half allowing just five shots in the first 45 minutes of play. The Lopes struggled to generate an offensive attack, firing off two shots with one on target. Andy Alanis was the only Lope able to get off multiple shots against the Titans.
Grand Canyon was able to get off just three more shots in the second half while Fullerton picked up its offensive attack in the latter part of the second half. In the 60th minute Ross McPhie scored the Titans' first goal off a cross from Oscar Torres. Cal State Fullerton would score 33 seconds later with a strike from Brandon West from the top of the box.
Despite the loss, Grand Canyon ends its non-conference schedule with a 4-3 record, the first time the Lopes have posted a winning record since being in Division I. The four non-conference victories was the most since the 2010 season.
"We feel that our talent continues to improve so our coaching staff has tried to bring some organization and accountability," Hyndman said. "We have some work to do but I am looking forward to getting into conference and see how we match up against some good teams."
Grand Canyon will be back into action on Friday, Oct. 2, as they kick off conference play in the WAC at home against Texas Rio Grande Valley and Houston Baptist.
