Live StatsLive Video PHOENIX – It is time for the Grand Canyon men's soccer team to kick off play in the Western Athletic Conference and it will begin at home for the Antelopes. GCU will host Texas Rio Grande Valley and Houston Baptist for head coach Schellas Hyndman's first matches in the WAC.
The Lopes wrapped up their non-conference schedule on Sept. 27 where they finished with a 4-3 record, the first time the Lopes have posted a winning record since being in Division I. The four non-conference victories was the most since the 2010 season. Grand Canyon's offense improves this season in non-conference by two goals (9) compared to 2014 led by Alberto Sanchez Garcia with four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points.
All-Time SeriesGrand Canyon will face Texas Rio Grande Valley for the first time in school history. The Lopes will meet Houston Baptist for the fourth time, with a 2-1-0 all-time record against the Huskies.
Scouting Texas Rio Grande ValleyThe Vaqueros have scored 11 goals this season while also giving up 11 goals as well. Isidro Martinez, Carlos Acevedo and Isaiah Hinds each lead UTRGV with two goals apiece this season but Martinez leads the team in points (7) adding three assists to his two goals. The Vaqueros have balanced in terms of scoring in both halves this season, scoring four goals in the first half and six goals in the second period. UTRGV has dramatically increased its shooting in the second half firing off 56 shots this season, compared to just 26 shots in the first half. Leo Castillo has received a majority of the minutes in goal for the Vaqueros posting a 1.51 goals against average with one shutout.
Scouting Houston BaptistThe Huskies are coming off a win against Central Arkansas at home, snapping a two-match losing streak. HBU last lost came against coach Hyndman's former school, Southern Methodist where the Huskies gave up three goals to SMU. Houston Baptist has been led by Marcelo Acuna and George Kelley this season scoring four goals each and Acuna leads the team in points (10) adding two assists. The Huskies have been deadly this season in the scoring half scoring eight of their 11 goals in the second half. HBU has split time between Philip Poser and Chance Pope in goal both playing four matches each. Poser has played in more minutes with a 1.27 goals against average and 72 percent saving percentage.
