Bakersfield used a four-run two-out rally in the fifth inning to propel them to a 4-2 win over GCU tonight at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
The win now moves Bakersfield (30-17-1, 15-6-1) into a first-place tie with GCU (28-21, 15-6) in the Western Athletic Conference. However, due to the tie CSUB had earlier in the season, the Antelopes remain percentage points ahead. Seattle defeated Chicago State tonight, 6-3, and is a half-game back of the Runners and Lopes.
GCU starter
Coley Bruns cruised for the first 4.2 innings, before allowing four hits and a hit batter to give the Runners a four-spot in the fifth, their only runs of the game. Bruns went 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
GCU scored in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by
Kai Kealoha.
Rouric Bridgewater doubled to lead off the frame.
GCU added another run in the sixth when
David Walker led off the inning with a double and later scored on
Chad De La Guerra's RBI single.
De La Guerra,
Ben Mauseth, and
Humberto Aranda each had two hits. De La Guerra extended his hitting streak to 23 games.
"It has been our nemesis all season to not stop the big inning," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We need to find a way to make the pitches and plays to prevent that inning. It is happening too frequently. On the positive side we played great defense and that kept the lead in a place where we were still in it. We will regroup and get ready for tomorrow."
The two clubs will meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m. The game can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats and audio links will be available at
