The Grand Canyon University baseball team fell to Sacramento State, 5-2, in the series opener Thursday at John Smith Field in Sacramento, Calif. The host Hornets used a pair of eighth-inning home runs to break a 2-2 tie and secure the victory.
"We were in it and the guys competed and competed well," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Coley pitched a real nice game. Tough one for him to take that loss. He pitched his heart out today. We just made some pitches late in the game, left some balls up and a good hitting team took advantage of it and hit some home runs."
The loss drops the Antelopes to 30-22, 17-7 WAC, while the Hornets improve to 30-23, 16-9 WAC. GCU remains atop the WAC standings, leading Seattle U by a half game.
The Lopes put a run on the board in the third and fourth innings, but were unable to generate any more offense, falling 5-2.
Humberto Aranda came around to score on an error in the third and
Matt Haggerty recorded a two-out RBI single in the fourth to generate GCU's two runs.
Coley Bruns (7-4) suffered the loss on the hill, surrendering four runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work.
Offensively
David Walker and
Chad De La Guerra posted a pair of hits each to lead the charge.
"We will be back tomorrow," concluded Stankiewicz. "The guys have always responded well to tough losses and we will regroup and get back after it tomorrow."
The Lopes and Hornets will meet again Friday in Sacramento, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. (Arizona Time). The game can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats and audio links will be available at
