Grand Canyon's men's volleyball season came to an end at the hands of top-ranked Lewis in the first round of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournament at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill., Saturday.
GCU (14-17) lost 3-0 by set scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-16.
Lewis, which moved up to the nation's top ranking earlier this week, improved to 25-2 and will host Lindenwood in next week's semifinals.
"Give Lewis a lot of credit," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "They played like the No. 1 team in the country. They were clicking at every phase of the game. They served well and they attacked and blocked at an extremely high level."
Freshman Shalev Saada led GCU in kills with eight. Senior Jon Schaefer had six and led the Lopes in digs with five. Junior Gerrard Lipscombe had two of GCU's three service aces. Junior Christian Ward had a solo block and a pair of kills.
"We learned the difference from playing a team like this to hosting a first-round game was four points," said Price, noting the team's scores in a pair of five-set losses to IPFW and Lindenwood. "We've got to find those four points.
"This was a really young team with nine freshmen and 11 new faces. We lose two quality seniors in Jon Schaefer and Keaton Berry, but the vast majority is coming back with another year of experience. We'll have a veteran team next year."
