GCU Falls In Five-Setter To No. 15 IPFW

Grand Canyon ended its men's volleyball regular season with a tough 3-2 loss to No. 15 IPFW at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
The Lopes (14-16, 5-11) lost by set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 18-16. The match lasted two hours, 13 minutes. IPFW improved to 18-11 and 8-8.
"It was a really good, entertaining match for the fans," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "Both teams gave everything they had to end the season."
Prior to the match, GCU honored its two seniors, outside hitter Jon Schaefer and middle hitter Keaton Berry. Both had strong matches. Schaefer had a career-high 28 kills, hit .393 and added five block assists, a service ace and five digs.
"What can you say about Jon Schaefer?" commented Price. "He kind of willed us. He left everything out on the floor of Antelope Gymnasium."
Berry played four sets and had five kills, four block assists, two digs and one service ace.
Following Schaefer in kills, junior Gerrard Lipscombe had 16. He hit .400 (16-4-30), had two aces, seven digs and was part of three blocks.
"Gerrard was pretty spectacular," added Price.
Junior middle hitter Christian Ward added to his single-season record in blocks with six more (119 for the year), including two solos. Freshman Josh Phalen had 18 digs and redshirt-freshman setter Puna Kaniho had 54 assists, eight digs and a service ace.
IPFW was led by Ramon Burgos with 23 kills and 10 block assists.
The match had 31 ties, including 12 in the decisive fifth set, and 11 lead changes, four in the fifth. The Lopes had more service aces (7-5) and digs (47-41). IPFW led in kills (67-61) and blocks (17-11).
GCU will play MIVA regular-season champion Lewis, ranked No. 2 in the nation, in the first round of the MIVA tournament Saturday at 5 p.m. (Arizona Time).
