GCU rallied numerous times today, having been in 4-0, 6-2, 8-7 and 12-9 deficits.
"I was proud of how our guys battled out there today," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "A team can tend to get off the pedal a bit when you have already won the series, but our guys kept having good at-bats. It was like a heavyweight fight where each team kept hitting each other, but we were are able to string together a few more in the end to get the win."
Trailing 12-9, the Lopes plated three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to secure the victory. Walker,
Paul Panaccione and
Brandon Smith each had RBI singles in the seventh.
With two out and nobody on in the eighth,
Humberto Aranda doubled off the right-centerfield wall to get things going for GCU.
Thomas Lerouge followed with a RBI single and would later score on a two-run double by Panaccione.
Lerouge had four hits for GCU, while Panaccione and Smith had three to pace the 21-hit attack.
For the game, GCU had seven two-out RBI, also going 11-for-24 with runners in scoring position. Additionally, the 21 hits are the second-most this season for the Antelopes (28 vs. Bradley). They are now 16-6 at home.
Mick Vorhof (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits over 2.2 relief innings.
Grand Canyon will now venture out on the road for the next 10 games. Up first will be a two-game series at New Mexico beginning on Tuesday at 5 p.m. (AZ time). "I think the guys are feeling good offensively," added Stankiewicz about the upcoming road trips. "We just need to maintain that same focus on the road that we have had here at home. If we can do that we should be in good shape."
