Grand Canyon opened its two-week 10-game road trip tonight with a 7-3 non-conference loss to New Mexico at Lobo Baseball Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
The loss dropped GCU's overall record to 21-15 and snapped a six-game winning streak. The Lobos improved to 20-15.
Despite outhitting the Lobos 14-8 in the game, the Antelopes found themselves behind 2-0 after two, 6-0 after three and 7-0 after four innings.
"We gave them too much early and we just couldn't get back in it," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Jaren came in and did a great job in relief, to stop the bleeding. Offensively we hit the ball well, but were unable to string them together well enough to close the gap. We will look to rebound tomorrow."
GCU did all of its run scoring in the seventh, when they plated their three runs on six hits.
Greg Saenz got the Lopes on the board with a RBI single that scored
Matt Haggerty.
Thomas Lerouge later singled up the middle that plated
Humberto Aranda and Saenz to cut the Lobos lead to 7-3.
On the evening, GCU was 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
Rouric Bridgewater had career-best four hits to lead the offense, while
Paul Panaccione had three. Haggerty chipped in a pair of hits. Bridgewater now has two or more hits in each of his last six games and is hitting .625 (15-for-24) over that stretch.
Zebastian Valenzuela (1-3) started for the Lopes and was tagged with the loss. He allowed seven runs, all earned, on seven hits over 3.2 innings.
Jaren Drummond came in and tossed 4.1 shutout innings in relief, surrendering only one hit. He fanned seven and walked none.
The two teams will wrap up their two-game set tomorrow with a game that will begin at 2 p.m. (AZ time). The game can be found on radio at KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), the home of Antelope men's basketball and baseball. Live stats and a video link are available at
