The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team (4-7) fell to No. 72 UC Irvine (7-9) today 5-2 in Irvine, Calif.
"The guys lost the tough fight today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "They did play very well. On all six courts we performed better in the second set than we did in the first, so if we do have to take a loss against a ranked team that's how we want to see it. We want to see that our guys are fighting for every point and that they're making those adjustments to get closer each time."
Adrian Legarreta and
Alexander Roggenkamp scored the two points for the Lopes. Legarreta defeated Shuhei Shibahara with a 6-4 win in the first set and secured the win in the second set's tiebreaker. Roggenkamp earned his win over Nico Mertens in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Felix Schueller fell short in a close match against Sebastian Heim on the first court.
"The top half of the lineup was really impressive," Prudhomme continued. "We had a close 6-4, 7-5 loss on Felix's court and then we got the job done at two and three with wins for Alex and Adrian. These matches show that we can compete with the best teams and we can win matches up high."
"We just need to keep learning from these tough matches and getting better each week," concluded Prudhomme. "We look forward to getting back on the practice courts and hitting it hard again on the next road trip."
