The Grand Canyon University baseball team (10-4) dropped a 9-5 decision to Kansas (5-8) Wednesday afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The visiting Jayhawks issued 11 walks, committed four errors and scored six of their nine runs with two outs, while the Antelopes left 13 runners on base in the matinee.
"It was a battle of bullpen arms and they (Kansas) had four games last week as well," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We knew it was going to be a battle and we had some opportunities to put some runs across and didn't take advantage of those opportunities and they did."
"The design is to give the young guys as many innings as they can so they can have that experience down the road during conference play," added Stankiewicz.
Trailing 9-1 heading into the home half of the fourth, GCU cut into the Jayhawk lead, putting three runs on the board.
David Walker's RBI fielder's choice,
Chad De La Guerra's bases-loaded RBI single and a sacrifice fly from
Brandon Smith produced the three GCU runs.
Josh Walker was tagged with the loss in his first collegiate start, working an inning and a third. Relievers
Ruben Rincon,
Travis Garcia-Perreira and
Ethan Evanko were a bright spot out of the pen, as the trio combined to hold KU scoreless in innings five through nine. Rincon didn't allow a hit in his 2 and two thirds innings of action and Evanko made his first appearance of the season in the ninth.
"It's all hands on deck from the bullpen standpoint, so they all have to be ready to go," said Stankiewicz.
Paul Panaccione's pair of hits at the plate paced the GCU offense.
"We have to play our game and know who you are as a player," commented Stankiewicz on the upcoming road trip. "Sometimes in those environments, players try to be someone they are not and you have to commit to being who you are."
The Lopes will open a seven-game road swing with a three-game set at Tennessee this weekend. Game one from Knoxville, Tenn., is slated to get underway Friday at 4 p.m. (Arizona Time). Fans can find links to follow this weekend's action at
