Lopes head to Chicago State this weekend for three-game set

The Grand Canyon University baseball team was defeated by Santa Clara, 15-0, Wednesday afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes drop their season record to 14-12, while the Broncos move to 11-12.

"One of the difficult things in baseball in consistency," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We've got to figure out a way as a team to stay mentally tough in these midweek games and that is the key. It's a matter of getting the ship heading on the right course again.

"We have to learn as a team to play solid baseball again and that's all we want," added Stankiewicz. "If we do that, we feel like we will be in most of the games and have a chance to win."

Santa Clara put the game away early, scoring three runs in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth to take a 12-0 advantage. Ethan Evanko (0-1) got his first start of the season on the hill, throwing the first 2.2 innings. The sophomore surrendered four earned runs, while fanning three in taking the loss. Ruben Rincon, Mick Vorhof, and Travis Garcia-Perreira all tossed an inning of shutout ball out of the Canyon pen.

Thomas Lerouge, Paul Panaccione, Garrison Schwartz and Zach Stierstorfer each had a base knock in the matinee.

"We have to regroup and get ready for this weekend's series at Chicago State," concluded Stankiewicz.

GCU, who is a perfect 3-0 in the conference, will head to Chicago State this weekend for a three-game WAC series. The Lopes and Cougars will open their series Friday with a 1 p.m. (Arizona Time) contest in Chicago. Fans can find more information on the 2015 baseball season at www.gculopes.com.
