Tied 3-3, Grand Canyon No. 1 singles player
Priscilla Annoual won the decisive match to give GCU (4-6) a 4-3 victory over Marquette (8-5) at Paseo Racquet Club in Phoenix, Thursday.
Annoual dropped the first set to Ana Pimienta 2-6, but won the next two 6-1, 6-3.
Today was a great day for GCU women's tennis," said Lopes coach Greg Prudhomme. "The girls battled to a tough, dramatic victory against a strong Marquette team. Marquette has a nice winning record and its only losses have come to nationally-ranked teams, most of them in the top 50. Anytime we can knock off a team that has played a schedule like that shows the level of our girls."
Grand Canyon grabbed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme won 6-1 and
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova were 6-4 winners. Already securing the point,
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi made it a sweep with a 7-6 win.
The singles competitions weren't as easy. GCU was up on just two of six matches after the first set.
"It got tough during singles," said coach Prudhomme. "We were down on most of the courts and only won two first sets. We battled back in some of those, but the key was Priscilla at no. 1, clinching the match for us when the score was tied 3-3.
"This was a nice match for the girls and now we will get ready for conference play on the road next week."
Along with Annoual, Tumova and Petrzalkova won in singles.
GCU takes on UTPA on March 20 and UMKC on March 21. Both matches are in Las Cruces, N.M.
