The Grand Canyon University softball team (11-11) evened its season record after picking up a pair of wins Saturday at the San Diego Classic I in San Diego, Calif. The Antelopes, who are now on a four-game winning streak, dropped St. John's (4-10), 8-5, in game one and run-ruled North Dakota (3-10), 8-0, in Saturday's second game.
In the first game of the day, the Lopes collected a season-best 16 hits and scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to defeat the Red Storm.
Haley Walker's three hits paced GCU at the plate, while
Kelsey Barak,
Brittany Medina and
Bianca Boling all recorded a pair of hits in the win.
Taylor Nowlin picked up her second win of the weekend and fifth of the season in the circle, striking out two in five innings of relief.
"Solid performance from the offense again," said head coach Ann Pierson. "Team is putting together good at-bats 1-9 which is huge. I like our chances when we're competing at the plate and our defense was great. Mariah (Valencia) did a good job getting some innings and keeping us in the game. Tay came in and threw a lot of good pitches."
In the second game,
Kailey Regester held North Dakota scoreless, fanning five over six innings. GCU scored four in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the run-rule. Freshman Bianca Boling blasted a solo home run in the second, her sixth of the season and
Nicole Newbury and Barak tallied three hits each to lead GCU to the 8-0 win.
"Kids played well," said head coach Ann Pierson. "Kailey threw a tremendous complete game. She's seeing her hard work pay off and should be very proud of that. Our offense was aggressive and we had some great at-bats. We ran the bases well and we had multiple kids with multiple hits."
"Everyone contributed today," added Pierson. "Bianca, Cam and Kelsey continue to have big hits with explosive power. Everyone is chipping in and it was another great team day."
The Lopes will take on Iowa State at 10 a.m. (Arizona Time) and No. 2 Oregon at 3 p.m. Sunday in the final day of the San Diego Classic I. Fans can find a link for live results to follow the action at
