The Grand Canyon University softball team (12-11) opened play at the Capital Classic Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Penn State (9-11) Thursday in Sacramento, Calif.
The Antelopes did most of their damage in the top of the second, scoring three times to take a 3-0 lead.
Nicole Newbury led off the frame with a double and
Camree Wartman followed with a two-run blast to give GCU a 2-0 advantage. The round-tripper marked the fifth of the season for the sophomore. The Lopes tacked on another run in the second on a
Laynee Gomez RBI single.
Canyon pushed across another run in the fifth when
Kelsey Barak smacked an RBI double to right, plating
Kayla Henry.
Kailey Regester picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle, hurling 4.1 innings of one-run ball. The junior right-hander allowed just four hits.
Taylor Nowlin spun the final inning and two thirds, holding Penn State scoreless, while striking out a pair. Newbury and Gomez eached notched a pair of hits at the plate to lead the GCU offensive attack.
The Lopes will continue play at the Capital Classic Tournament Friday with games against Loyola Marymount at 11:15 a.m. and host Sacramento State at 3:45 p.m. Fans can follow the action via a link for live stats at
