The Grand Canyon University baseball team (9-3) dropped a pair of contests to visiting UW-Milwaukee (5-3) Saturday at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes fell 11-1 in the first game of the day and lost 3-2 in the night cap.
"Game one was one of those deals where we didn't do a good job of minimizing and gave up a couple of big innings late, but again give them credit, they had some good at-bats to generate those big innings," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Game two we swung our bats well enough to win, but didn't do the little things and that cost us."
"Zebastian Venezuela pitched a great game (game two) and we needed him to go deep in the game, so what he did was terrific and really proud of his effort out there," said Stankiewicz.
In game one, the Lopes scored their lone run in the home half of the fifth on a
Paul Panaccione RBI single to center.
Matt Haggerty,
David Walker and
Garrison Schwartz all picked up a base knock.
Cameron Brendel suffered the loss on the hill, working five and a third.
In game two, UW-Milwaukee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second frame and the Lopes responded with a run in the third and fifth to knot the game at 2-2, but the Panthers scored on wild pitch in the top of the eighth to break the tie and held on for the 3-2 victory.
Chad De La Guerra added to his already impressive 2015 stat sheet, collecting four hits in five trips to the dish to lead the Canyon offense. One of those four hits was a solo home run in the fifth, which evened the score at two apiece.
Brian Kraft and Schwartz each recorded a pair of hits in game two to contribute to the offensive efforts.
Zebastian Valenzuela got the nod on the mound in game two and was sharp, surrendering just five hits in six innings of action. The left-hander fanned six, while issuing just one walk. Despite being tagged with the loss,
Ruben Rincon had a great outing out of the pen, not allowing an earned run, while giving up just one hit in three innings.
"We have to let this one go and bounce back and get ready for a big week coming up, starting on Tuesday," concluded Stankiewicz.
The Lopes will be back on the diamond Tuesday when they welcome Kansas for a two-game set. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on Cox7 and can also be heard on KXXT 1010. Fans can visit
