PHOENIX – Grand Canyon baseball head coach Andy Stankiewicz continues to build one of the best college baseball programs in the country and as a result, the Antelopes have been able to recruit top-talent across the country. The talent and depth has been recognized from pro scouts as the Lopes hosted their annual Scout Day.
"Scouts are busy traveling across the country so we like to set a day aside for them so they can come out and see our squad," Stankiewicz said. "It gives scouts a chance to get their eyeballs on players that are draft-eligible and they would like to follow."
GCU baseball and Major League Baseball scouts have known each other quite well recently as three players on GCU's 2015 roster were drafted this year; Chad De La Guerra was drafted in 17
th round by the Boston Red Sox, David Walker was taken in the 31
st round by the Chicago White Sox and Andrew Naderer was picked up by the Detroit Tigers in the 37
th round.
"Since Andy has taken over he continues to get better players and not only do they represent the school but they have a chance to represent Major League Baseball," John Kazanas said, a scout of the Chicago White Sox. "Andy brings credibility because he has played at the professional level and we have a great deal of respect for what coach and GCU brings to the table."
Hard-working and great determination is the scouting report when scouts take a look at a crop of Grand Canyon baseball players under the leadership of Stankiewicz. Brian Reed, a scout for the Detroit Tigers, returned to Brazell Stadium after playing for the Lopes from 1994-97.
"Andy has been able to recruit top-quality athletes that we desire at the Major League level and as a current scourt and GCU Alumni that makes me very proud," Reed said. "We know what we are getting out of a Grand Canyon player and the credit goes to Stankiewicz and his staff being able to provide their players the resources and tools to succeed."
With three players drafted, Stankiewicz is achieving his goal of building a program that is winning on a consistent basis and providing student-athletes the opportunity to continue their playing careers at the professional level.
"I really believe that most of these guys want to play at the next level so we will provide them with the tools to achieve that dream," Stankiewicz said."
With many scouts located in the area, this group of GCU baseball players have a chance to make a name for themselves right before heading into the season. Twenty-three of the 30 teams in the MLB sent their scouts to Brazell Stadium where they will be able to see the Lopes taking batting practice, running the bases and see the pitchers in action along with a scrimmage on the diamond.
"We have built some success and hopefully that will be able to steamroll," Stankiewicz said. "We have been able to develop a great working relationship with scouts and we will present our program in a professional level."
