Grand Canyon's regular-season home finale nearly turned into one more late comeback at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark, but New Mexico held off the Lopes 11-9 on Sunday after using an 11-run, two-inning stretch to flip the game.
GCU (19-29, 9-12 MW) still enters the final weekend tied with UNLV for the sixth and final Mountain West Championship spot after the Rebels also lost Sunday. UNLV holds the head-to-head tiebreaker, meaning the Lopes will need to finish one game better at Nevada than UNLV does against San Diego State next weekend to extend their season.
Sunday's finale came on Senior Day, when GCU honored 14 players before the game:
Aidan Lee,
Vince Bianchina,
Jacob Limas,
Mito Perez,
Cael Boever,
Dillon Orr,
Brock Toney,
Dominic Chacon,
Trevor Schmidt,
Luke Moeller,
Kade Huff,
Elijah Higginbottom,
Cam Cunnings and
Jace Smith.
Schmidt delivered one of the day's top senior moments in the second inning, launching his 10th home run of the season as part of a five-run frame that gave GCU an early 5-0 lead. But a freshman was the top offensive performer on Senior Day, as right fielder
Tanner Johns went 4 for 4 with a double and a three-run home run in the seventh that pulled the Lopes back into the game.
GCU built its early lead entirely with two-out production in the second. Johns singled, sophomore center fielder
Griffin Cameron followed with a single, and sophomore second baseman
Jake Sanko drove in the game's first run with a single through the right side. Perez then doubled to right-center to score two more, and Schmidt followed with a two-run homer to right for a 5-0 advantage.
New Mexico answered with three runs in the fourth and eight more in the fifth, turning GCU's five-run lead into an 11-5 deficit. The Lobos scored all 11 of their runs in that two-inning span, taking advantage of a long fourth inning and a fifth inning that included two hit batters, two walks, a wild pitch and four hits.
The Lopes did not go quietly. After senior right-hander
Cam Cunnings entered in the fifth and stopped the damage, GCU began climbing back. Cunnings threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out two to give the Lopes a chance to rally.
GCU's biggest push came in the seventh. Junior first baseman
Cannon Peery singled, junior left fielder
Carson Ohland walked and senior
Kade Huff came off the bench with a pinch-hit RBI single to left-center. Johns followed with the swing of the day, driving a three-run homer to right field for his fourth home run of the season and cutting the deficit to 11-9.
The Lopes had chances to complete the comeback. In the eighth, Cameron walked and Perez drew a two-out walk to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate before two popouts ended the inning. In the ninth, Ohland opened with a ground-rule double and moved to third, again bringing the tying run to the plate before New Mexico closed out the game.
GCU finished with 14 hits, three more than New Mexico, and had eight different players record at least one hit. Schmidt went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs on his Senior Day, while Peery added two hits. Johns finished with eight total bases and three RBIs, continuing a late-season power surge from the freshman.
The Lopes will close the regular season next weekend at Nevada, needing to outpace UNLV by one game to move into the Mountain West Championship field.
