PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team (5-21, 3-11) wrapped up their conference season today in Antelope Gymnasium against Kansas City (14-12, 7-7) with a close three set match.
Preceding the match, the Lopes honored Megan Byrnes on Senior Day. She has been a member of the squad for four years, tallying 324 kills and 126 blocks during her career.
In the opening set, GCU fell just short 25-23. UMKC won the second 25-17, but the Lopes came back for another close third set 25-22. Megan ByrnesMelody Horton led the offense with 13 kills (.393), tying UMKC's Madison Mosier for most kills in the match. Natalie Tardy had 11 kills off of 21 attempts (.286). GCU earned 36 assists with Randahl Powers collecting 19 of them, while Michelle Steagall picked up 15.
For digs, Emily Vitel snagged 16 of them while competing at libero in tonight's match.
Grand Canyon had their strongest hitting percentage (.333) in the opening set, accumulating 15 kills off of 33 attempts.
Next week, the team will take on their final two matches of the season, squaring off against UMass Lowell at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 and at 4 p.m. on Nov. 21. For fans unable to attend, a full recap will be available at www.gculopes.com.
