Live StatsPHOENIX – Coming off their first conference victory of the season, the Grand Canyon University women's volleyball team looks forward to their upcoming matches against the UMKC 'Roos and the Chicago State Cougars.
Last week, GCU battled against the Western Athletic Conference leader New Mexico State (15-5, 5-0) in a four-set match led by
Melody Horton who recorded 10 kills, six digs, and three blocks. The Lopes put up a strong effort with narrow losses in the opening two sets, before winning the third to force the final.
As a team, they placed 16 block assists and three solo blocks.
Hannah Hicks and
Gracie Dimond led the charge at the net with five blocks apiece. Their efforts this season place them in the top-two slots for the Lopes with Hicks' 49 total blocks and Dimond's 30. Dimond is tied for fifth on the conference leaderboard for blocks per set (1.00), while Hicks is close behind at 8
th (.95).
GCU aced nine serves to the Aggies' three during the match. Horton and
Jordyn Sanchez each drilled three aces over the net.
Against UTRGV (8-11, 1-4), Grand Canyon found success in a tight four-set victory on Saturday. Horton continued her standout weekend with a career high 17 kills. She also tallied 12 digs and four blocks. Sanchez wasn't far behind with 15 kills and 12 digs of her own.
GCU outblocked the Vaqueros 13-8. Dimond and Hicks each earned three more during the match.
Emily Vitel recorded a stellar four service aces. Her efforts earned her a slot on the WAC leaderboard for service aces per set in conference matches with a .35 per set average.
Scouting UMKCThe 'Roos are coming off of a 3-0 win over Chicago State last week. Sydney Crimmins recorded a strong .583 hitting percentage off of 14 kills, no errors, and 24 attempts. She also earned four of the 15 block assists during the match. Jessica Hendin picked up an additional nine kills (.333). Kaylyn Brandt totaled 21 assists and five digs.
Scouting Chicago StateThe Cougars struggled in their match against UMKC with Elli Woinowsky and Melina Staengle leading the team with nine kills apiece. With an additional two service aces and a pair of blocks, Woinowsky tallied 12 points. Corey Davis earned 26 assists and Shontanae Addison picked up 12 digs.
