The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team was defeated by UC Davis in Los Angeles, Calif., today, after a competitive first match to open their season.
"The guys went down 2-5 today, but they fought hard and we had good signs of competing right out of the first match," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "Today was going to be a little extra tough playing a team that has played Stanford and Cal already, especially with some of our guys having those first match jitters. UC Davis was on their fifth match so they were already well into their season and our guys are just starting off, so that had a little bit to do with the difference."
Picking up the wins for the Lopes were two returning players,Â
Felix Schueller and
Meidy Chazeau, competing at the second and six slots, respectively. Schueller won his match over James Wade in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Chazeau competed against Adam Levie, winning the first set 7-5, before falling short in the second 3-6. UC Davis had already secured the team win before they reached the third set, so a tiebreaker was played for the third. Chazeau won the tiebreaker 10-7.
"They're a good team but we competed well with them," explained Prudhomme. "It was nice to see the two veterans getting the singles wins."
Freshman
Philip Kuehnen had a tough three-set loss to Eli Whittle, winning the opening set 6-3, but coming up short in the next two 3-6, 4-6.
UC Davis earned the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep, with GCU falling short 6-4 at the first and third slots and 6-3 at the second.
"We had a good start at courts two and three in doubles, so we had a chance to put up that doubles point, but that snuck away," Prudhomme continued. "We want to turn this around to winning-ways as soon as we can, but we do understand that we have to learn from those first match jitters and move on—which the guys are going to get a chance to do when we get back on the court again tomorrow. All things considered, we're optimistic about moving forward with the season."
The Lopes will continue play in Los Angeles tomorrow against Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. Check back at
