The Grand Canyon men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up a highly successful first season in Division I with a pair of matches at the Hanscom Brandeis Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The women finished off a stellar season with a 5-2 win over Abilene Christian. The win capped a season in which the Lopes went 13-6 and won seven of their last eight.
GCU opened quickly taking the doubles point behind wins by the duos of
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme, as well as
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova.
The Antelopes won four of the six matches, highlighted by straight-set wins by Annoual, Prudhomme and
Frederique Van de Velde.
Prudhomme finished her first season in D-I with a 14-3 singles record, while Annoual went 13-3.
The men dropped a 5-2 decision today to NJIT and completed the season with an 11-8 overall record.
The men dropped all three doubles matches to begin the match, but received a solid effort from
Adrian Legarreta and
Meidy Chazeau at No. 3. The pair lost 8-7, falling 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Benjamin Collomb at No. 4 and
Felix Schueller at No. 5 picked up wins for the Antelopes. Collomb finished his season with a team-best 13-5 record. Schueller ended his campaign at 12-5, winning his last three straight.
"We had a solid day to finish up our first year in Division I," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "The rain forced play inside and I think it gave a slight advantage to NJIT who play inside all season. With that said we were in striking distance and put in a huge fight to give them a scare on a number of courts. The women were declared tournament champions after going undefeated over the weekend. The results were close, but this was a great win against a team that made it to the D-II final four last season in what was their final season in D-II, as it was for us. This is a great finish to a great season and will aid us we continue to build toward the future."
