Grand Canyon had No. 13 IPFW on the ropes, but the Volleydons rallied to defeat the Antelopes 3-2 by set scores of 20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-9 at Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind., Friday.
It was the ninth five-set match of the season for Grand Canyon (12-13, 2-8). The Antelopes are 4-5 in matches that have gone the distance. IPFW improved to 17-4 and 6-3.
GCU's Ben Ponnet had 21 kills and hit .310. Andrew Muys got the start at one of the outside hitter positions and, in his most extensive work since returning from injury, answered with 17 kills. Senior setter Keith Smith had 52 assists.
For the second straight night, GCU was hurt with service errors. The Antelopes had 23 with four service aces. IPFW had five aces and 17 errors. GCU had 12 errors in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the 'Dons, with just one ace. Sixteen of GCU's service errors on Friday were in the last three sets.
"As pleased as I was with our serving in the first two sets, I was equally as disappointed how we served in the last three," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We went from serving aggressively to serving recklessly and it allowed IPFW back in the match."
The Antelopes had four service errors in the fifth set, while IPFW had two aces.
The Antelopes took a 2-0 lead, having to avert a couple of IPFW comebacks. GCU led 14-9, when the 'Dons came back to cut it to 15-14. Ponnet followed with a kill and two service aces to give the 'Lopes an 18-14 advantage. IPFW cut it to 19-18, but GCU answered with three straight kills from three different players. Ponnet, Smith and Muys each added points for a 22-18 lead. Ponnet had seven kills in the set.
Grand Canyon hit .500 and out-blocked the Mastadons 6-0 in the first set. Ponnet had six kills. Connor Dougherty had four and Muys had three and was part of three blocks and two digs. Keaton Berry was part of four first-set blocks.
GCU returns home for non-conference matches next weekend against NJIT. Friday's match starts at 6 p.m. and Saturday's contest gets underway at 4 p.m. Fans unable to attend can follow live links at www.gculopes.com
