After a strong showing at the 2014 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Grand Canyon University men's and women's track and field teams opened its outdoor slate Friday at the Willie Williams Invitational on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. The two-day meet, which features both high school and collegiate athletes, will conclude on Saturday.
On the track for the Canyon men,
Lance Parker took home a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 21.48 seconds. True freshman
Marcus Flannigan raced to an eighth place finish in the sprint. Flannigan also took fifth in the long jump, tallying a leap of 7.11 meters.
LeSean Marks finished second in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 53.64 seconds.
Jahliell Wiltshire and
Brendan Casel took home sixth and seventh, respectively.
Tyler Vandyke (15:28.85) and
Brandon Kocmoud (15:47:97) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000 meter run.
On the field side of things,
Kyle Jervis recorded a heave of 47.07 meters for a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw.
Josh Ralston took home eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.90 meters.
Kirk Jay Gould II placed ninth in the javelin throw, recording a toss of 48.12 meters.
In the women's events,
Shavine Hodges carried over her dominance from the indoor season in the sprints, finishing first in the 200-meter dash (24.13 seconds). Fellow speedster,
Samantha Bogatz, placed third in a time of 24.49 seconds.
Kelsi Klotter shattered the school record in the 5,000 meter run, posting a time of 18:27.54 on her way to taking home sixth in the race.
After crossing the finish line in a time 1:09.17,
Dionna Mercer finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
Jelena Andjelkovic garnered a seventh-place finish in the 1500 meter run, posting a time of 4:55.84.
In the field events,
Andrea Olstead tied for fifth in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.42 meters.
Jennifer Rolph and
Jessica Yates finished seventh and ninth, respectively.
In the hammer throw,
Vanessa Levy recorded a heave of 49.19 meters, which was good enough for sixth in the event. Levy also finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 12.78 meters.
Nyomi Mosley placed sixth in the event with a mark of 12.31 meters.
