After picking up a pair of wins on Friday at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium, the Grand Canyon University softball team duplicated its performance on Saturday, beating Southern Utah and Nevada for the second time in as many days. With the 9-4 win over Southern Utah and the 13-2 win over Nevada, the Antelopes remain perfect on the weekend and advance their record to 8-7 in 2014.
In game one, Southern Utah jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after scoring once in the first and three times in the second. The score remained the same until the home half of the fourth when Grand Canyon broke things open, crossing the plate nine times during the frame. The 'Lopes strung together six hits in the inning and took advantage of several timely hits to muster nine runs in the fourth.
The 'Lopes wouldn't look back from there and finished with a 9-4 victory over the T'birds for the second consecutive day.
Kailey Regester came into the game in relief of starter
Kiki Sepulveda and closed the door on the Thunderbirds, striking out three and not surrendering a run in five innings of work. The right-hander and reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week moves her record to 4-0 on the season after being credited with the win Saturday.
"Once we changed our approach on both sides of the ball, we played better and were able to get some offense going," said head coach Ann Pierson. "We had some big double plays to shut down their offense and it was good to see our hitters become runners and runners become runs."
Nicole Newbury had a big game at the plate, as the second-year player went 3-for-4, scored twice, and compiled a pair of RBI.
Head coach Ann Pierson picked up her 300th career win on Saturday with the win over Southern Utah. All of Pierson's wins have been with the 'Lopes.
Game Two
Grand Canyon run-ruled Nevada after six innings in the second game of the day, after winning in walk-off fashion against the Wolf Pack on Friday. The 'Lopes used 15 hits to push across 13 runs and defeat the visitors from Reno by a final of 13-2.
Stephanie Pesqueira shined in both the circle and at the plate, as the senior struck out a season-high eight batters on her way to hurling a complete game six-hitter. The Tempe native helped her own cause at the plate, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 in the box and also drove in four runs in the mid-day affair.
"This was Peski's best game on the mound and she's thrown some good innings for us," added Pierson. "She shut down a very good hitting team by pounding the zone and hitting her spots and the defense played well behind her."
Camree Wartman advanced her hitting streak to 14 games and did so in style, smashing a two-run bomb over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning. The freshman's round-tripper, which was one of two hits in the game, will go down as her first career home run.
In addition to Pesqueira and Wartman,
Claire Zampini and
Newbury also had multi-hit performances.
"It was a huge day for GCU softball and I'm proud of the girls for changing their minds and getting back to work," concluded Pierson. "We need to learn and get after them tomorrow from the first pitch."
The 'Lopes will look to go perfect on the weekend when they wrap up play at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium tomorrow with a game against Southern Utah at 12:30 p.m. Fans unable to make it out for Sunday's games can find a link for live stats at
