The Grand Canyon University softball will host their annual invitational this weekend, marking the first home competition for the squad this season. The three-day event at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium will feature Nevada and Southern Utah, in addition to the hosting 'Lopes. The invitational is set up so three games will be played on both Friday and Saturday, followed by a pair of games on Sunday that will conclude the tournament. Grand Canyon is currently 4-7 on the season after most recently competing at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
The Antelopes have already squared off with Southern Utah, as the two foes met at the Red Desert Classic two weeks ago in St. George, Utah. Grand Canyon came out on top in the contest, defeating the Thunderbirds by a final score of 7-3. Stephanie Pesqueira had a big day for GCU in the first showdown, as a grand slam helped her drive in five runs throughout the game.The senior also picked up the win in the circle for the 'Lopes.
Freshman Camree Wartman, who leads the team with a .378 average, will look to add to her 10-game hitting streak this weekend.
This will be the first-ever meeting for GCU and Nevada, as the Wolf Pack enter this weekend's tournament with an impressive 8-2 record on the season. Nevada faced Southern Utah earlier in the season at the Red Desert Classic, knocking off the T'birds 4-2.
GCU will next be at home March 28-29 when Kansas City travels to Phoenix for a three-game WAC series.
