The Grand Canyon University softball team came up just short of making it a perfect weekend in its home invitational finale, dropping a tough 9-8 decision to Southern Utah on Sunday. The Antelopes had beaten Southern Utah and Nevada twice before Sunday's action at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium. Despite today's loss, GCU finished the weekend with an impressive 4-1 record and knotted its season record at 8-8.
"I'm happy with the tournament and anytime you can go 4-1 on the weekend you have to be pleased," said head coach Ann Pierson. "It was great to play at home for the first time this season."
GCU jumped to an early lead on the visiting Thunderbirds, scoring twice in the home half of the first inning when
Camree Wartman and
Haley Walker each crossed the plate.
The 'Lopes picked up another run in the second after Walker doubled to left, scoring
Stephanie Smith and giving Canyon a 3-0 lead.
Southern Utah got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2 but GCU answered in the bottom of the inning when Wartman extended her hitting streak to 15 games, driving a pitch to right field, scoring Walker and
Kayla Henry. The 'Lopes weren't done at the plate, as
Jenna Coates then smacked a three-run home run over the left field fence to advance the lead to 8-2.
The T'birds bounced back with a big inning of their own, scoring seven times in the sixth to take the lead 9-8. The score wouldn't change from that point on and GCU was unable to rally to a late-inning comeback and fell victim to the visitors from Cedar City.
Walker, Coates, and Wartman all finished the affair 2-for-4 at the plate. Wartman needs a base knock in the next three games to tie the school record of 18 for consecutive games with a hit.
Stephanie Pesqueira absorbed the loss in the circle, surrendering 12 hits in 5.1 innings of work. The senior hurler moves her season record to 2-4.
"We swung our bats really well this weekend and did a good job of playing small ball in most of our games and connecting on some timely hits," added Pierson.
"We will work hard Tuesday and Wednesday to get ready for another tournament next weekend in California," concluded Pierson.
The 'Lopes will be back in action Thursday when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego Classic. GCU will open up the four game tournament with a contest against the University of San Diego on Thursday night. Fans can find tournament updates at
