After going 4-1 last weekend at its own invitational, the Grand Canyon University softball team returned to action Thursday night, defeating the University of San Diego 3-1 in game one of the San Diego Classic I. The Antelopes, who pushed their record to 9-8 with the victory, will play four games during their time in San Diego, as GCU will play a pair of games tomorrow before concluding tournament play with a showdown against Colorado State on Saturday afternoon.
"We had a lot of great battles at the plate and it was a complete win for us in all facets of the game," said head coach Ann Pierson. "We brought great energy and it was evident in our play."
Grand Canyon got on the board early, scoring in the top of the first when
Lauren Regester smacked an RBI double to right-center, scoring
Haley Walker who walked to open the frame.
The 'Lopes got another run in the third on a
Claire Zampini RBI single, which scored
Stephanie Smith and gave Canyon a 2-0 lead.GCU pushed across one more run in the fourth on a
Kelsey Barak RBI single.
Zampini finished the contest with a pair of hits and tallied an RBI in Thursday's win.
Stephanie Pesqueira picked up the win in the circle, hurling a complete game four-hitter. On her way to picking up the win, Pesqueira struck out two and didn't walk a San Diego batter.
"Pesky through a great game, she was really locating well and kept them off balance," added Ann Pierson. "She mixed speeds really well and the defense played solid behind her."
The 'Lopes will return to the diamond for a pair of games tomorrow against Illinois-Chicago (12:30 p.m.) and Utah State (8 p.m.). A link for live stats and a complete recap from all of the action in San Diego can be found at
