The Grand Canyon University baseball team (3-4) today split their doubleheader against visiting Hofstra (1-2) at Brazell Stadium, winning the first game by a score of 10-3, but falling 7-5 in the second.
"Today was kind of a roller coaster ride in the respect that we won the opener and had a chance to make game three a defining game, but we couldn't do it," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "To their credit, they kept battling and they had some big hits when they needed them. You have to tip your cap to them in that third game, because quite honestly, I felt like they wanted it more than we did."
In the opening game, the 'Lopes had another strong outing on the mound, this time by
Andrew Naderer, who allowed three runs on five hits over 8.0 innings of work.
Joey Wise came in relief of Naderer and struck out his final batter to get out of a bases loaded situation.
"It was good to see Andrew stay competitive," Stankiewicz said. "He doesn't seem like he has quite caught his rhythm yet, but it's early. He is obviously going to continue to get the ball. He didn't have his best stuff, but he kept us in the game and helped get us a win."
Chad De La Guerra had another big day at the plate, connecting for a grand slam in the fifth inning that broke a 2-2 tie. The Antelopes scored two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth to establish a new season-best with 10 total runs on the board.
GCU struck first when
Josh Meyer plated two runs on a double into right field in the bottom of the first inning to score
David Walker and De La Guerra who reached via back-to-back hit by pitch. Two innings later, the Pride scored two of their own to even the game before De La Guerra sent a Nick Kozlowski pitch over the right field fence for his first grand slam with the 'Lopes.
Meyer finished with three RBI in the first game, while
Michael Pomeroy collected three hits and scored twice.
GCU drew three walks in their two-run seventh inning, while
Jon Kealoha came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of De La Guerra, his fifth RBI of the game.
The 'Lopes held a 5-3 lead over Hofstra through the first 7.0 innings of the second game before the Pride put three runs on the board in the top of the eighth. GCU had the bases loaded in the bottom half of the eighth and two on board in the ninth, but were unable to push across another run.
Coley Bruns got the start in the second game, allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
Malcolm Purdy was charged with the loss.
"Coley pitched well enough, but his pitch count jumped up pretty quick," Stankiewicz added. "I felt like we had to make some decisions there in terms of going to the bullpen. It also seemed like he was kind of out his rhythm as well, but, he kept us in the game and made pitches when he had to. He gave us a chance to win the game, but unfortunately we didn't."
Matt Haggerty and
Charles Wagner each collected two hits in the second game, while Haggerty joined Walker and De La Guerra with one RBI apiece.
There was a delay in between the top and bottom of the sixth inning due to a benches clearing brawl, which resulted in a number of ejections on both sides.
The series finale will be played tomorrow with first pitch slated for 10 a.m. (Arizona time). Fans can follow the action live by visiting
