Grand Canyon was on the short end of two tight sets and lost in three to host No. 14 Ohio State at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio Friday.
The Antelopes (6-8, 0-5) fell to the nationally-ranked Buckeyes 3-0 by set scores of 25-18, 31-29, 25-23.
"We had some chances," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We had some swings, but they made a few more plays and we have to be more consistent in transition."
Grand Canyon had three set points in the second and survived two others before the Buckeyes were able to take a 2-0 lead. In the third, GCU trailed 24-20 and outlasted three set points before Ohio State finished the match.
Senior outside hitter Ben Ponnet led Grand Canyon with a match-best 18 kills. He hit .263 with eight errors on 38 swings. He added two blocks, including one solo. Senior right-side hitter Robbie Brannick had 11 kills and hit .259 on 27 attempts and four errors. Redshirt-sophomore middle blocker Sean Saxton had four kills and hit .571 on seven attacks without an error.
Ben Ponnet did a really good job attacking," added Price. "Sean Saxton was very solid and I really liked what Robbie did offensively."
Sophomore outside hitter Gerrard Lipscombe had six kills, a team-best nine digs and two block assists. Setter Keith Smith had 38 assists and three blocks, including one solo. Saxton also had three block assists. Libero Jared Morrison had eight digs. Smith and Ponnet had six digs each.
