Grand Canyon lost 42-6 to No. 11 Illinois at Lemoore High School in Lemoore, Calif., Saturday.
It was the first dual of the season for GCU. Illinois has improved to 6-0.
The Antelopes picked up six points by forfeit at 125 from sophomore AJ Salazar, who remains unbeaten on the season at 5-0. He went 4-0 last week in winning in his home state at the Colorado Mesa Doubletree Open.
"Hats off to a tough Illinois team," said GCU coach Jon Sioredas. "We have a lot to take away from the competition, especially knowing where we are headed from here."
The Antelopes had a pair of close battles against the nationally-ranked Illini. At 133, Godwin Nyama-Cutler, also 4-0 last week after winning the 133 title, dropped a 7-3 decision to Dominic Olivieri. Redshirt-junior Marcus Haughian, a third-year starter in the Lopes lineup, lost 8-4 to Jeff Koepke, who improved to 6-0 on the season.
Along with battling a nationally-ranked team, individually, GCU went up against three nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 157, Chayse Jackson lost by technical fall to No. 7 Isaiah Martinez. Casey Larson lost by fall at 165 to No. 13 Jackson Morse. Freshman 174-pounder Trey Ronayne was defeated by technical fall to No. 20 Zac Brunson.
GCU will participate in Sunday's Roadrunner Open in Fresno, Calif. Fans can follow results and updated brackets at www.gculopes.com. Action is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. (Arizona Time).
The Lopes travel to No. 2 Minnesota on Thursday and host their first match at GCU Arena Saturday against Utah Valley.
