The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams picked up opening day victories today at the Pacific West Conference Championships at the Central Oaho Regional Park in Waipahu, Hawai’i.
The men’s squad, seeded fifth for the championships, defeated fourth-seed BYU-Hawai’i 5-3. The Antelopes improved their overall record to 13-7. They will take their No. 13 national ranking into tomorrow’s semifinals against No. 1 seed (nationally No. 5) Hawai’i Pacific at 11:30 a.m. (Arizona time).
“The guys had an amazing win after losing to this same team just two days ago,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “The guys kept their spirits high despite falling 1-2 in the doubles. I’m very pleased that we were able to advance to the semifinals of this championship. Our guys are hungry and optimistic even though we know we have a tough test in facing the top seed tomorrow. The guys will give it their best fight.”
Alexander Roggenkamp and
Felix Schueller, ranked ninth in the west region, won 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles.
GCU won four of the five completed singles matches, highlighted by the
Ahmad Saleem’s come-from-behind win. He dropped the opening set in his No. 2 singles match but won 6-4, 6-2 over the last two sets to win the crucial point.
Arjun Bal had a dominate win at No. 4, winning 6-2, 6-1.
The third-seeded GCU women swept to a 5-0 win over sixth-seed Point Loma. They improved to 12-4 overall and advance to the semifinals to face No. 2 BYU-Hawai’i tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. (Arizona time).
“The girls played a great match today,” added Prudhomme. “When we played Point Loma earlier in the season, we went 2-1 in the doubles. Today we swept all three points. We are hoping that this win will cement our spot in the NCAA regionals. The girls are looking forward to another opportunity against a very tough BYU-Hawai’i squad.”
The Antelopes quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles round with 16
th-ranked
Priscilla Annoual and
Justine Majan winning 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
GCU wrapped up the match with wins by
