The Grand Canyon University women's basketball team (23-8) will take on GNAC member Simon Fraser (24-5) in the NCAA Division II West Region Semifinals tomorrow at 12 p.m. (Arizona time). The teams have met once before this season, with the Clan coming out victorious, 69-60, at the Disney Classic on Nov. 9, 2012. The 'Lopes twice beat Simon Fraser last season. GAME NOTES
VS. SIMON FRASER: GCU is 2-1 all-time against the Clan, having won their first two meetings last season at GCU Arena and falling, 69-60, on Nov. 9, 2012 at the Disney Classic in the first game of the season. The ‘Lopes outscored Simon Fraser by 24 points in their two wins.
POSTSEASON HISTORY: This year marks the seventh postseason appearance for the ‘Lopes, six of which have come in the NCAA. They also competed in the NCAA tournament in 1997, 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012, posting a 3-5 record in that time. Their best finish came in 2011 when they advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history before falling to Cal Poly Pomona in the West Region Finals. Last year, GCU advanced to the second round of the West Regional. This is the second straight year that the ‘Lopes are playing in the West Region Semifinals.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU defeated third-seeded UC San Diego, 68-57, on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regionals. GCU was led by Judy Jones with 24 points and 12 rebounds, her 19
th double-double of the year. Justine Johnson also added a season-high 18 points.
ON THE HONOR ROLL: Judy Jones was named Pacific West Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year, while Maylinn Smith received First Team and Cindy Ekweozor received Honorable Mention Honors. The ‘Lopes have had the last four Players of the Year in the conference. Jones was also named to the 2013 Daktronics West Region Women’s Basketball First Team.
BALANCED ATTACK: The ‘Lopes have outscored their opponents 2146-1683 through 31 games, scoring 1032 points in the first half and coming out strong in the second half with 1073 points.
BIG ON THE BOARDS: GCU has outrebounded their opponents, 1410-1017, through 31 games. The ‘Lopes have pulled down more rebounds in 26 of their games this season, going 22-4 in those contests. Judy Jones leads the squad with 323 rebounds, averaging 10.4 rebounds per game.
JONESIN’ FOR MORE: Judy Jones has made an immediate impact on the squad, averaging a team-high 16.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Jones scored a season-high 34 points on Dec. 15 versus Fresno Pacific and has recorded 19 double-doubles so far this season. Among all players in Division II, Jones is tied for fourth in double-doubles and ranks 22
nd with 10.4 rebounds per game. Jones was named PacWest Player of the Week four times this season.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: Among all Division II teams this season, the ‘Lopes rank second nationally with a 12.8 rebounding margin, 12
th with a 15.1 scoring margin, 14
th with 54.2 scoring defense, and 29
th with a 35.4 field goal percentage defense.
