The Grand Canyon University women's basketball team (22-8) will square off against UC San Diego (22-10) tomorrow at 12 p.m. (Arizona time) in the first round of the NCAA West Region Championships, hosted by top seed Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash. The Antelopes are the sixth seed in the tournament, while the Tritons received the third seed. The two teams played earlier this season, with GCU coming out victorious (64-62) at the Disney Classic in November. GAME NOTES
VS. UC SAN DIEGO: GCU is 5-9 all-time against the Tritons and will face the CCAA-member school for the first time in postseason play. Earlier this season, the ‘Lopes narrowly defeated the Tritons, 64-62, on Nov. 10 at the Disney Classic in Anaheim, Calif. UCSD won this year’s CCAA title after defeating Cal State L.A., 66-61, in the finals.
POSTSEASON HISTORY: This year marks the seventh postseason appearance for the ‘Lopes, six of which have come in the NCAA. They also competed in the NCAA tournament in 1997, 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012, posting a 3-5 record in that time. Their best finish came in 2011 when they advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history before falling to Cal Poly Pomona in the West Region Finals. Last year, GCU advanced to the second round of the West Regional.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU lost to Academy of Art, 60-58, in overtime of the semifinals at the inaugural PacWest Conference Tournament, hosted by Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center. GCU has lost their last two games, both played at the Felix Event center, but has not lost three consecutive games since the 2009-10 season.
ON THE HONOR ROLL: Judy Jones was named Pacific West Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year, while Maylinn Smith received First Team and Cindy Ekweozor received Honorable Mention Honors. The ‘Lopes have had the last four Players of the Year in the conference. Jones was also named to the 2013 Daktronics West Region Women’s Basketball First Team.
BALANCED ATTACK: The ‘Lopes have outscored their opponents 2078-1626 through 30 games, scoring 995 points in the first half and coming out strong in the second half with 1042 points.
BIG ON THE BOARDS: GCU has outrebounded their opponents, 1369-987, through 30 games. The ‘Lopes have pulled down more rebounds in 25 of their games this season, going 21-4 in those contests. Judy Jones leads the squad with 311 rebounds, averaging 10.4 rebounds per game.
