The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team won their final contest of the long Northern California road trip, 51-38, over Dominican. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 21-5 overall and 13-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Penguins fell to 5-18 overall and 4-11 in conference play.
The win was the ninth in the past 10 contests for the ‘Lopes.

Judy Jones recorded her 17
th double-double with a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Chigozie Ekweozor also scored in double figures for GCU with 10 points.
The ‘Lopes shot 40.8 percent (20-for-49) from the field while holding the Penguins to a 26.3 mark (15-for-57). As they have done all season, GCU was strong on boards, pulling down 46 rebounds compared to 29 for Dominican.
GCU opened the game on a 7-1 run as Smith scored all of the points for the ‘Lopes in the first four minutes. The Penguins made it a two-point game, 9-7, over the next two minutes before GCU used a 4-2 run to build the lead to 13-9 with 11:33 on the clock.
Both teams were held scoreless over the next two minutes, at which point the ‘Lopes went on an 8-1 run to extend their advantage to double-digits, 21-10. GCU narrowly outscored Dominican for the remainder of the half as they carried a 27-15 lead into the locker room.
It was the fourth time this season that GCU has held their opposition to under 20 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Jones was the high-scorer for the ‘Lopes at the half with eight points, while
Maylinn Smith and
Deanna Daniels both added seven points.
The two teams traded points for the first seven minutes of the second half until GCU claimed a game-high 28-point lead (51-23) via a 17-0 run with just over three minutes remaining. The ‘Lopes defense held the Penguins scoreless for nearly 10 minutes during that run.
At that point, Dominican reeled off a 15-0 run of their own to make the score 51-38 with 54 seconds on the clock, and the score would remain the same for the remainder of the contest.
The ‘Lopes will return home for two games next week beginning on Saturday when they host Hawai'i Pacific at 4:30 p.m. at GCU Arena. The game will feature Homecoming festivities. Fans can follow the action live by visiting
