The 19
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team fell to Hawai’i Pacific, 64-63, tonight at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Antelopes’ record drops to 21-6 overall, 13-3 in the PacWest Conference and 12-1 at home. The win improves the Sea Warriors to 16-6, 12-4 in the league.
GCU is now in a tie for first place with California Baptist in the conference standings with two regular season games remaining. The Antelopes are looking to win their seventh PacWest crown in the past eight seasons.
The Sea Warriors trailed throughout and did not see their first lead until they went up 41-40 with 11:22 remaining in the game and overcame a five-point deficit with just under eight minutes left.
“HPU has always done a good job and head coach Reid Takatsuka does fantastic job of getting his kids ready to play,” said head coach Trent May. “They are a gritty bunch and we commend them and their staff.”
Trailing 54-50 with less than five minutes to go,
Maylinn Smith hit a three to cut the lead to one. The ‘Lopes took the lead a minute later when
Judy Jones sank two from the line.
Justine Johnson’s three and a layup by
Deanna Daniels gave the ‘Lopes a 60-57 lead with 1:57 left. Daniels and Johnson finished with career highs, scoring 15 and 13, respectively. Daniels added eight rebounds.
“Justine and Deanna did a fantastic job and showed a lot of determination.” added May. “Tonight they really let it go and we credit their all-out hustle and hunger tonight.”
Four straight missed jumpers by the ‘Lopes allowed HPU to score seven straight and escape from GCU Arena with a win for the second consecutive season.
“Tonight we had a lot of careless turnovers,” said May. “We needed some timely plays. We would play hard on defense and get a steal, only to give it right back to them. In a game like this the details are so important and understanding what is at stake each possession is crucial. Tonight we did not do a good job of managing those possessions.”
The night began well for the Antelopes as they opened a 30-15 lead over the game’s first 14 minutes. The ‘Lopes shoe 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the floor in the opening half and made 12 trips to the line, making nine.
For the game, GCU forced 20 turnovers, while committing 19 of their own. They won the glass, out-rebounding the Sea Warriors, 40-33, despite the number being even at 20 in the second half.
Grand Canyon will return to action on Feb. 23, when they close out their home season with a game against BYU- Hawai’i. Tip time is slated for 4:30 p.m. GCU will close out the regular season with a game at Azusa Pacific on March 2 in Azusa, Calif.
