The 14
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team fell for the first time this season, losing 9-0 to 2
nd-ranked BYU-Hawaii at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The Antelopes record now stands at 4-1 overall, the Seasiders improved to 3-0.
GCU’s No. 1 doubles team of
Priscilla Annoual and
Justine Majan pushed the nation’s 2
nd-ranked duo of Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu to the limit, before falling 9-7.
Frederique Van de Velde played a tough match at No. 4 singles, losing 5-7, 2-6 to No. 34 Marika Kobayashi.
The Seasiders singles lineup featured the No. 1 (Hwang) and No. 3 (Liu) players in the country.
“Our girls had an unbelievable match at No. 1 doubles losing 7-9 to the No. 2 doubles team in the nation,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “The score didn't go our way in the match and the Seasider girls really raised their game to beat us on every court, but right from the beginning our girls fought hard and kept it up the entire match. A match like that will help us improve as the season moves forward.”
Grand Canyon will be back in action tomorrow for another important west region match when they face Cal State LA at 11 a.m. GCU will face Dixie State at noon on Saturday and Dominican at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. All matches will be played at Paseo.
