The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their Division II Scholar-Athletes for track and field, which included seven Grand Canyon University athletes. The accolade recognizes the top performers in track and field both athletically and academically. Athletes chosen must have a 3.25 GPA or better and have posted a provisional or automatic qualifying mark for either the indoor or outdoor NCAA Championships.
Additionally, GCU’s women’s track and field team garnered USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, given to squads with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better.
“I am very proud of our women’s team and all of the individual athletes that have achieved the honor of being named Scholar Athletes by the USTFCCCA,” said head coach Tom Flood. “Their recognition is well-earned through their great work ethic in the classroom as well as on the track. I look forward to having even more of our athletes earn this wonderful honor next year.”
Robert Matthew garnered individual honors for the men, while
Callie Davis,
Shavine Hodges,
Brianne Kee,
Sarah Stemm,
Brittany Warren and
Jessica Yates were recognized on the women’s squad.
Matthew, a sophomore, competed in the long jump and triple jump during both the indoor and outdoor season. The Sports Management major earned USTFCCCA West Region All-Region honors in the triple jump for the indoor season and posted provisional marks in the triple jump for both the indoor and outdoor season.
Davis, a junior, garnered USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the 60-meter hurdles for the indoor season after earning a provisional mark in the event. She is a Digital Film Production major.
Hodges was also recently selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team, while previously earning 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Track and Field/Cross Country Team honors for District 8. She finished as the runner-up in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. The sophomore Biology major also placed second in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes at the indoor championships in March.
Hodges was a six-time All-American for her performances throughout the season and also garnered four USTFCCCA All-Region Awards for both the 2012 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Kee, a sophomore Finance and Economics major, earned USTFCCCA All-Region Awards for the 4x100-meter relay and long jump for the outdoor season, while garnering the same nod for the 60-meter dash and long jump during the indoor season. Kee was also awarded with All-American honors in the 4x100-meter relay at the outdoor championships.
Stemm, a senior Exercise Science major, was honored with USTFCCCA All-Region Awards for the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay for the outdoor season and the 4x400-meter relay for the indoor season.
Warren culminated a successful senior year with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships to earn All-American honors in the event. The Exercise Science major also collected USTFCCCA All-Region accolades in the pole vault for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Yates garnered All-American honors in the triple jump with a seventh-place finish in the event at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The junior Communications major earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the triple jump for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
