The Grand Canyon University baseball team bounced back from yesterday’s loss at Dixie State to win both games of a doubleheader today in St. George, Utah. With the two victories, the Antelopes are now 26-21 overall and 23-16 in Pacific West Conference play. Dixie State is now 28-18 overall and 24-15 in the conference.
GCU jumped to just one game behind the Red Storm for second place in the PacWest Conference standings and with a win tomorrow, would tie Dixie State for second at the conclusion of the conference season this weekend. The ‘Lopes have also now won six of their last seven contests.
GCU out-hit the Red Storm 23-16 in the two games today and own a 32-25 advantage in that department over the three-game series so far.
The ‘Lopes won the first contest, 3-1, behind the arm of
Jorge Perez, who allowed just one run on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Offensively, the ‘Lopes were led by
Joey Bristyan and
Michael Pomeroy with three hits each, while Pomeroy added two RBI and
Jackie Samora had one.
Both teams were held scoreless over the first two innings of the game before GCU plated two runs in the top of the third with an RBI double off the bat of Pomeroy to score Bristyan and
Aaron Mees.
Dixie State scored their lone run in the fourth inning, the lone frame in which they collected more than one hit. GCU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Samora.
GCU followed up their Game 1 victory with a 12-5 win in the second contest.
Justin Lindsey got the starting nod for the second game and allowed five runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. The relief corps of
Cody Repenning and
Mark Jarrett combined for 2.1 scoreless innings to secure the win. Repenning picked up the win, while Jarrett secured his eighth save.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 after the first inning, but GCU responded by scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. GCU used hits by Samora,
Ernesto Ortiz, Mees and
Kyle Peterson and walks by
Derek Mendoza and Bristyan to pull ahead in the second.
However, Dixie State scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead at 4-3. The Red Storm tacked on another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-3.
The ‘Lopes scored nine runs on eight hits over the final two innings of the game, led by Samora’s grand slam in the seventh inning. The homer was the second of Samora’s career, as his first came last night against Dixie State, and his first career grand slam.
GCU tied the game at five apiece in the sixth after
P.J. Garcia tripled to score Pomeroy, who opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Mendoza line out. Samora and Ortiz each walked to load the bases, while Mees gave the ‘Lopes the lead for good with a bunt single to third to score Garcia. GCU added two more runs in the inning and an additional five in the seventh via Samora’s slam and an RBI groundout by
Lucas Leifeld.
