The Grand Canyon University men's and women's track and field teams return to Southern California to compete in the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif., tomorrow and Sunday. The Antelopes spent last weekend at two different meets in Southern California.
Steve Scott is a three-time Olympian and was a six-time All-American in track and cross country while at UC Irvine. Scott is a member of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame and currently coaches at Cal State San Marcos.
The men's and women's teams are currently ranked third nationally in the most recent United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Outdoor Track and Field poll, while both teams also sit atop the West Region rankings.
Tomorrow's events are slated to get underway at 2 p.m. with field events, while distance running events (5000-meter run and 3000-meter steeplechase) will start at 6 p.m. Sunday's competition will begin at noon for both field and running events.
The 'Lopes have just two regular season outdoor meets remaining, with the CSULA Last Chance Meet in Los Angeles, Calif., on May 11-12 serving as their final weekend of action before the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships in Pueblo, Colo., on May 24-26.
Following the first six meets of the outdoor season, the 'Lopes have collected eight automatic qualifiers and 82 provisional marks as
AAron Hill and
Karlin Stewart (long jump),
Dominique Hubert (100-meter dash),
Vince Frawley (pole vault),
Ann-Marie Duffus (long jump) and
Petra Fanty (400-meter dash) have each posted automatic marks in their respective events.
Shavine Hodges posted the fastest time among Division II athletes in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.64 seconds. Frawley has the best pole vault so far in the outdoor season with a mark of 5.20 meters. Hubert owns the second-fastest time men's in the 100-meter dash with 10.32 seconds, a time he established last weekend at the Beach Invitational.
