The Grand Canyon University baseball team lost 4-1 to the No. 1 ranked University of Tampa in the series finale today in Tampa, Fla.
GCU falls to 9-14, while Tampa improves to 16-3.
The Antelopes scored their lone run of the game in the first inning.
Joey Bristyan,
Nick Chapman and
Michael Pomeroy led off the game with singles.
Derek Mendoza followed with a sacrifice fly that put the ‘Lopes up 1-0.
The Spartans answered with two runs on three hits in both the second and fifth innings.
GCU threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. Mendoza and
Charles Wagner singled and were followed by
Ernesto Ortiz who was hit by a pitch. Spartan closer, Evan Stobbs, was able to induce
P.J. Garcia into a groundout to shut the door on the rally.
Justin Lindsey (4-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings.
Coltin White and
Austin Buelow each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Bristyan led the offense, collecting two hits. He has hit .389 (7-for-18) over his last four starts with four runs scored.
The Antelopes will now turn their attention to Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. where they will play 16 of the next 17 games. First up in the extended home slate will be a four-game set with Academy of Art, beginning with a doubleheader on March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
